$5 Classic Movie Night | Paramount Theatre

Experience the great films of Hollywood’s Golden Era in one of America’s finest Art Deco movie palaces.

With over 3,000 seats and a meticulously-restored interior, the Paramount offers a true “Movie Palace” experience straight out of the 1930s – with period newsreels, cartoons, previews, live music from the Mighty Wurlitzer organ and the audience participation spinning wheel game of “Dec-O-Win.”

Director Paul Mazursky’s empathetic tale delivers a hilarious and touching portrait of a shy Russian circus musician who defects to the U.S. and discovers that life in the Free World just might not live up to his expectations.

Far from a dated Cold War period piece, the film retains its immediacy and relevance due both to Mazursky’s three-dimensional approach to the immigrant experience in America and to Robin William’s star turn as saxophone player Vladimir Ivanoff.

Taking on a role which easily could have devolved into a cartoon, the young comedian – fresh from his Mork and Mindy TV success – put in over a year of study of both the Russian language and the saxophone before stepping in front of Mazursky’s cameras. The result was a sensitive and stellar performance that demonstrated Williams’ immense range as a dramatic actor and paved the way for the memorable performances he would deliver over the years.
