ON HIATUS: $5 First Friday at Chabot Space & Science Center | Oakland Hills

Enjoy $5 admission to the Chabot Space & Science Center in the Oakland Hills every First Friday of the month from 6-10 pm.

$5 admission includes unlimited access to everything from laser and planetarium shows to Night Hikes and Star Stories. Regular admission is $18 for adults, so this is a super deal.

Every First Friday event will include a variety of fun evening activities for the whole family. Enjoy music, a bar, science demos, talks, telescopes, space missions and more.

Some activities have limited capacity and are first come, first served, so get there to sign up early. There is no pre-registration for First Fridays; just show up and join in on the fun.

Hacking Horticulture

Join horticulturists and gardeners as we learn about soil, plant types, growing seeds, germination, and more! Talk with plant hackers and even learn about aquaponics! Enjoy hands-on plant activities that spark imagination and are fun for the whole family.

Project Create Activity Space
Project Create is a place where families create together to spark their curiosity and love of making. Imaginations will be stimulated as our makers think of new ways to tinker with materials we see every day making them better, different, or new.

Paper Plants and Flowers with The Florasmith, Stephanie Redlinger
Time: 6-10pm
Location: Gruener Astronomy Hall
Stephanie’s background is in the arts. She earned her degree in Fine Art and Graphic Design and became deeply interested in the intersection where Fine Art, Graphic Art, and Craft meet. The interplay between these three areas of the art world continues to inspire her art work and now her deep appreciation of the botanical world has been added to the mix. Stephanie has been making paper flowers since 2015.

Butterfly Gardening and Paper Crafts- UC Berkeley Botanical Garden

Want to learn about caterpillars and butterflies? This is the fun, easy way to discover the secrets of these fascinating creatures that live in both urban and wild areas. Learn all about lifecycle and butterfly gardening from Sal Levinson. Check out Sal Levinson’s display of eggs, caterpillars, and chrysalides along with several species of butterflies. Also, enjoy a hands-on activity from Sal’s book, Butterfly Papercrafts: 21 Indoor Projects for Outdoor Learning.

Waterwise Gardening with Native Plants – UC Botanical Garden
Time: 6-10pm
Location: Rotunda
Much of California has a distinct Mediterranean climate — warm, dry, fire-prone summers interrupted by cool wet winters. California shares this climate regime with the Mediterranean region itself along with parts of Chile, South Africa, and Australia. Learn how California’s native plants have responded to these unique environmental challenges…and how gardeners can craft drought-tolerant landscapes that take advantage of these features. Examine native plant adaptations which enable them to thrive in environments with minimal water.

DJ Dance Party

Imperfect Produce

More than 20% of the fruits and vegetables grown in America never make it off the farm because they aren’t perfect enough for grocery store standards. This results in billions of pounds of wasted produce every year. We’re talking about produce that is just as nutritious and delicious but looks a little different.

Kijani Grows Aquaponics Display and Microscope Compost Activity

Location: Mezzanine
Kijani Grows is a farming technology organization located in West Oakland California. They use aquaponics to improve lives in urban and rural communities by utilizing traditional concepts, local materials and modern technologies. Their vision is to reduce disparities by addressing common basic needs using aquaponic technologies and systems through education, job creation and local food access.

Hacking Seeds Workshop with Ploughshare Nursery
Times: 6:45, 7:30, 8:30pm
Location: Biology Lab

Learn how seeds grow with the staff of Ploughshares Nursery. Select and sow your own vegetable or flowers to take home after the workshop. You will learn the names of the parts of seeds and baby plants and how to keep seed and baby plants safe and thriving in a world full of things which want to EAT them!

Telescope Makers Workshop

Open to all ages, the Telescope Makers Workshop is an all-volunteer group committed to helping people build their own telescopes. Drop in to see what they are up to!

Telescope Viewing
Times: 7:30 – 10:30pm
Location: Observatory Deck
Chabot’s giant, historic telescopes offer a unique way to experience the awe and wonder of the Universe. Check out celestial viewing day and night. Our observatory deck offers breathtaking views 1,500 feet above the Bay.

Star Stories
Times: 8:30pm
Location: Observatory Deck
Lay on our new Observatory Deck and look up at the stars! Bring your sleeping bags and blankets and come listen to an expert stargazer explain the mythology behind the constellations, stories from the night sky as seen throughout history and look for planets and other clues to help orient you to the night’s sky. (Blankets are also provided).

Project Sound: Maggi Payne and Chamberlain
Time: 8:45 & 9:30pm
Experience the astral ambiance of electronic music paired with lush soundscape visualizations. Showcasing local sound artists, Project Sound is an immersive multi-sensory experience under the dome.
Recommended for ages 12 +.

BeanSprouts Cafe
Time: 6-9pm
As Chabot’s exclusive in-house café, Bean Sprouts can provide sandwiches, salads, and yummy treats.
