$5 Silent Movie Weekends | Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum

Did you that the East Bay played a big part in the silent film movie industry in the early 1900s? Niles (near Fremont) was home to the Essanay Film Studio where superstars like Charlie Chaplin made tons of silent classics.

Today, the studio is a museum and they host regular silent movie screenings with live music on most Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoons for just $5.

Salomy Jane (1914, California Motion Picture Corp., 35mm print from Library of Congress) Beatriz Michelena, a noted San Francisco singer, began her film career with Salomy Jane, starring in eleven features for the CMPC, in San Rafael, from 1914 to 1917. Based on a Bret Harte story, the film is remarkable for its polished presentation and entertainment value, and could easily be mistaken as a production of the 1920s. It was first shown at the Edison Theater on August 30, 1915. This event is co-sponsored by the Anne T. Kent California Room, Marin County Free Library, with assistance from the California Film Institute.
Preceded by shorts:
