A journey of elevating female empowerment in oneself as influenced by “BOSS bitches” in everyday culture
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
San Francisco, CA – Pyrography & Heat artist Tanya Herrera, a woman of color and Native of the Bay Area, will be featured in a special solo exhibition at Evolved SF Art Gallery in the historic Mission District. The FREE gallery event will open with a reception On June 4th from 6-9pm PST featuring music by Mr. Lucky of Sazon Libre.
This installation highlights a technique that Tanya has developed called “fire stenciling”, a method that uses chemical combustion to burn images onto raw wood. She has been developing this technique since 2008, and is now ready to share it as part of this exhibit, along with other techniques that she’s championed like pyrography and the use of metal leaf.
“Boss Bitch” is a pop culture term for a confident, successful, independent person who identifies as female and is not afraid to stand up for what they believe in. Each burned portrait symbolizes their impact on Tanya personally, and at large in a world dominated by patriarchal forces.
“Boss bitches build successful careers, and are a positive influence on the world even despite facing adversity of many kinds,” says Herrera. “Marginalization, socio-economic barriers, healthcare access, and issues unique to being part of LBGTQ+ and BIPOC communities all have an impact on Women and the levels of success they achieve. This exhibit aims to pose the questions: What BOSS bitches have empowered you? What is your personal favorite BOSS bitch moment?”
About the Artist:
Tanya Herrera began her fascination with art as a young child growing up in the Bay Area she was heavily influenced by arts and crafts at home and the museums, theaters and symphonies in San Francisco. Herrera experimented with traditional mediums from middle school into college, always asking “what else is there?”. Herrera’s work as pyrographer and heat artist began in 2008 by trying to make an impression of a stencil on wood. Now after exploring many forms of pyrography and heat art over the course of nearly 14 years she now is able to create an entire show with the “Fire stencil” medium. Tanya’s other mediums include burning on leather and bone as well as heat molded vinyl records and gilding.
