All of SF’s ‘Amazon Go’ Stores Closing April 1
Hoodline recently shared that Amazon is closing all four of its Amazon Go stores in San Francisco.
Amazon announced that Amazon’s San Francisco brick-and-mortar cashless stores, located at 300 California Street, 98 Post Street, 575 Market Street, and 3 Embarcadero Center, will close on April 1, 2023. Amazon has stated it has elevated its portfolio and decided to close its underperforming locations. San Francisco’s Amazon Go stores are all located within walking distance of the Financial District which is still like a ghost town and has not bounced back from the onset of the pandemic.
San Francisco initially pushed back against the cashless stores, which they said is unfair to those without a bank account. The Board of Supervisors passed a resolution in 2019 to ban cashless stores and restaurants. In response, Amazon added one cashier to its Amazon Go stores in The City.
In addition to the San Francisco shops, Amazon is closing two stores in New York City and two shops in Seattle. However, the company is not closing down the Amazon Go model and plans to open up new locations. Amazon operates more than 20 Amazon Go stores across the country. Amazon launched its cashless Amazon Go stores in 2018.
