Free Kabuki Film Screenings | Japantown

Kabuki is a classical Japanese dance-drama. Kabuki theatre is known for the stylization of its drama and for the elaborate make-up worn by some of its performers.

The Japanese Cultural and Community Center present free screenings of Kabuki theater on film with English subtitles and explanation for those who are lost. All ages welcome.

Come study on film the Kabuki drama, “Jirozaemon and the Courtesan Yatsuhashi” (Kagotsurube), featuring an all-star cast in one the most sensational plays of late Kabuki.

Under the blooming cherry trees of the pleasure quarters, the humble, pockmarked merchant Jirozaemon falls helplessly in love with Yatsuhashi, the most popular courtesan in Edo. Can he redeem her and give her a life of happiness or will the cruel winds of fate blow them in another direction?
