For those of us devoted to making meaning through art and writing, what challenges and opportunities do we find in the Covid-19 pandemic? As we face an existential threat together while separated from each other, we find ourselves powerfully drawn to new life priorities. This May, the Interdisciplinary Arts and Writing MFA Program at California Institute for Integral Studies (CIIS) will offer three free workshops designed to inspire important new projects, hosted by MFA faculty Carolyn Cooke and Alex Burger with MFA Program Chair Dr. Cindy Shearer and special guest artists.

The idea for this series came from Alex and Carolyn ‘s work together to create a TV show about what happens when a novel virus strikes Burning Man and 80,000 revelers are trapped in a zone of sacrifice to save humanity. We’ve been thinking for the past three years about how societies can adapt and change to save humanity from extinction, as well as about the weird feedback loop between fiction and reality. Won’t you join us?

Session #2: Art & Survival (May 20, 1-2 p.m. PT)
RSVP

Now is the moment to redefine our ideas about plagues and healing. What are the ills that plague society? How to create new practices that connect humanity in an urgent way, and are artistically potent?
Guest artists: Dr. Larry Bogad, performance artist, activist, and author of Tactical Performance: Serious Play and Social Movements and Charlotte Saenz , who researches the Zapatista Movement’s Pedagogy of Seed and cultivates an urban milpa with interspecies co-conspirators.
