At Bay Area Independent Chinese Dancers’ second annual fundraiser and showcase, we present to you “Outstation”, the Malaysian, Singaporean and Indian English term for being away from home, with all the nostalgia and heartbreak that comes with it. As east, southeast and south Asian artistes performing traditional arts outside their home countries, this afternoon, we’ll tackle what that means in practise. Are we simply an echo of art in the motherland, or do we, too, have something unique to bring to this country and our communities overseas? Our answer is yes: we have people who refine and uphold long traditions and the latest developments in Asia, we have artistes who bring a little (or a lot) to our communities here and everything in between. Outstation doesn’t have to mean only tragedy or sacrifice to move us onwards. With courage, compassion and your support, “Outstation” can mean beauty too.
