Bike-to-Work day is about promoting the bicycle as a healthy, efficient and green means of urban transportation.
It is, in a sense, an extension of Frank Lenz’s mission to convince the public that the new-fangled “safety” bicycle offered practical and enjoyable exercise. In 1892, Lenz left his home in Pittsburgh to circle the globe on a 57-pound Victor with inflatable tires. He never made it back, despite having covered some 15,000 miles across North America and Asia. Two years into his epic journey, he disappeared mysteriously in Eastern Turkey.
David V. Herlihy, author of The Lost Cyclist will discuss the Lenz case and show numerous unpublished photographs taken by Lenz himself 1890-94. Book signing to follow.
