Event Details

Come celebrate the 125th anniversary of Jewish cemeteries in Colma and learn about and honor those who planted the seeds and nurtured the San Francisco Jewish community on Sunday, November 2, 2014.

When San Francisco’s booming growth required the relocation of cemeteries to outside the city, Congregations Emanu‐El and Sherith Israel dedicated Home of Peace and Hills of Eternity cemeteries in Colma in 1889.

Now 125 years later, they invite you all to a special day of activities and discovery featuring:

  • Interactive treasure hunt tour – bring the family and receive your special passport to travel through history and “meet” or learn about Levi Strauss, Emperor Norton, Adolph Sutro, Florence Prag Kahn, Josie Marcus Earp and Wyatt Earp, Isaias Hellman and many others from San Francisco history with a Jewish connection.
  • Explore the art and architecture of the cemetery and mausoleums
  • Learn to interpret and read the signs, symbols and words on Jewish headstones
  • Help preserve the pioneer headstones in the oldest part of the cemetery
