“California Henge”: San Francisco’s Natural Light Show (September 1-2)

California Henge, San Francisco’s twice-yearly solar spectacle, returns in early September 2026.

Twice a year, the rising sun lines up with San Francisco’s street grid, sending a golden beam down California Street toward the Bay Bridge. The fleeting alignment has become one of the city’s coolest sunrise photo ops.

What Is California Henge?

California Henge occurs when the position of the sun aligns with San Francisco’s east-west oriented streets, most notably California Street. As the sun rises or sets, it beams directly down the corridor framed by skyscrapers, creating a dramatic interplay of light and shadow. The effect is particularly striking when one of the Bay Bridge towers is silhouetted in the sun’s path, creating an iconic photo opportunity.

This phenomenon is named in homage to Manhattanhenge, a similar event in New York City, where the sunset aligns with the Manhattan street grid. Other cities with similar events include Bostonhenge and Chicago Henge, but California Henge has its own West Coast flavor, framed by the rolling hills, Victorian buildings, and a clear line of sight to the Bay Bridge.

When and Where to See It

The fall 2026 California Henge is expected around September 1–2, 2026, with the exact best morning dependent on the sun’s alignment. The most popular viewing spot is around California Street & Gough Street on Nob Hill, looking east toward the Bay Bridge. Early risers and sunset chasers alike gather here, hoping for clear skies and the perfect alignment.

Plan to arrive before sunrise to find a good spot and get set up. The April 2026 California Henge drew photographers to the same area for the sunrise, although clouds ultimately blocked much of the show.

The spring 2026 alignment occurred on April 9, when the sunrise was at approximately 6:54 a.m.

What to Expect

Golden Light: If skies cooperate, the rising sun sends warm light between the buildings and down California Street.

Bay Bridge Views: The alignment can create a dramatic composition with the Bay Bridge and its towers directly in the sun’s path.

Photographers Galore: This is a favorite with local photographers, who often show up with long lenses and tripods to capture the fleeting shot.

Weather Matters: Clear skies are key. Clouds completely obscured much of the April 2026 display, despite photographers gathering before sunrise.

Tips for Viewing

  • Arrive early: Get to California & Gough before sunrise to find your preferred angle.
  • Check the forecast: Clear skies make all the difference.
  • Bring a zoom lens: A longer lens helps compress the buildings and Bay Bridge into the classic California Henge composition.
  • Watch for traffic: If you’re photographing from the street, stay out of traffic and be aware of cars and cable cars.
  • Have a backup morning: The alignment can be visible over a small window, so consider trying more than one morning if the weather is iffy.

When Is California Henge Happening?

California Henge occurs twice a year, around April and September, when the rising sun lines up with San Francisco’s street grid. The 2026 spring alignment took place April 9, and the next one is expected in early September 2026.

For the fall event, the current best estimate is September 1–2, 2026, at California Street & Gough Street on Nob Hill. We’ll update this guide when the exact 2026 date and timing are confirmed.

After this fall’s event, the next California Henge will take place in early April 2027.
