As we welcome the Year of the Tiger and reflect on the hardships our community has faced these last two years, we are comforted and inspired by the strength and resiliency shown by Chinatown’s residents.
Chinatown has long been a community of strong and resilient people. Since the 1860s, our ancestors have faced adversity, discrimination and exclusion in America. In the face of all these obstacles, in what became Chinatown, our people built a flourishing community – and left us with a beautiful legacy of fraternity, entrepreneurship, art, culture, and activism. For decades, San Francisco’s Chinatown has served as a beacon of hope and comfort for new and old generations alike.
Chinatown provides a platform where multiple generations can share their experiences and create a sense of belonging within their families and communities. This exhibition serves to spotlight several of our community members. Prompted by the question, “What is keeping you STRONG in the new year?”, our subjects let us into their world and offer us hope for the new year. Our guests are invited to add their own photos to our gallery wall with their own answer to our question. Collectively, we send a message to the community that together, we are #ChinatownStrong.
The exhibit also showcases a beautiful photo booth that was designed by one of our youth leaders. Community members are invited to write their own wishes to put on the wish trees that surround the exhibit. Lastly, we feature a mahjong table so that community members can enjoy a game while they are in the space.
