Often cited by film critics and scholars as the most influential American movie ever made, Citizen Kane, Orson Welles’ 1941 motion picture debut (at age 25) not only utilized all the techniques known to film-making at the time but also introduced new techniques such as coated lenses, “deep focus.” Loosely based on the life of William Randolph Hearst, this is the epic story of media titan Charles Foster Kane (Orson Welles), told via flashback after Kane dies at his palatial estate, Xanadu, with a single, mysterious word on his lips: “Rosebud.” Kane’s eventful but ultimately unsatisfying life unfolds before us, helped along by the reminiscences of Kane’s oldest friend, Jed Leland (Joseph Cotten), his mother (Agnes Moorehead), his business manager, Mr. Bernstein (Everett Sloane), his second wife, Susan (Dorothy Comingore), and Kane’s butler at Xanadu, Raymond (Paul Stewart). Citizen Kane was nominated for nine Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, Best Editing, and Best Score, though it won only for Best Writing (Herman J. Mankiewicz and Orson Welles).
