2014 Polar Plunge

Even Superman gets cold diving into the freezing Bay
By - posted 2/20/2014 No Comment

Delight at watching other people freeze their tail ends off by taking a plunge in the bay for a good cause in Aquatic Park; it’s time for the Polar Plunge to benefit the Special Olympics of Northern California.

Unlike the Escape From Alcatraz triathlon, these nearly 1,000 brave souls won’t be swimming, just braving it—some in wacky costumes—for a quick, but agonizing dip in the chilly waters of the SF Bay.

Those who are too chicken for a plunge are typically sent to the “Chicken Coop,” so be sure to wash them with ridicule… and donate a buck to their cause while you’re at it.

2014 Polar Plunge & Dash & Splash
Saturday, February 22, 2014 | Plunge at Noon
Aquatic Park at Van Ness, San Francisco
FREE to watch

Schedule:

  • 8:30 am – 5k Dash & Splash Run/Walk Registration ($45 minimum)
  • 9:30 am – 5k Dash & Splash Run/Walk starts
  • 10 am – Plunger Registration Opens ($125 minimum)
  • 12 noon – Plunge
  • Post-Plunge Party (everyone who raises a minimum of $125 is invited)

The event is free to watch. In past years, there has been a costume contest at 11:30 am, right before the plunge.

There is also a 5K Dash & Splash Run/Walk which takes place the morning of the Polar Plunge, and is just as crazy and fun as the plunge itself with wacky costumes. Runners and walkers can pay a flat registration fee or raise additional funds for the Special Olympics.
