A proposal is moving forward in San Jose to rename a downtown San Jose corridor after 44th President Barack Obama.

NBC Bay Area shared the news that a coalition of community advocates have been working for over 3 years to rename connecting parts of Bird Avenue, South Montgomery Street and Autumn Street as Barack Obama Boulevard. The effort, led by Alex Shoor, who worked on Obama’s 2008 campaign, has gathered almost 3,000 signatures and has raised more than $9,000 since launching in 2017.

The proposal is gathering momentum as it’s now backed by the Mayor of San Jose Sam Liccardo as well other city leaders. The proposal will be moving forward to City Council within the next few months.

Fun Fact: Did you know the Bay Area already has a Barack Obama Boulevard? Milpitas renamed a portion of Dixon Landing Road in 2019.
