A Bay Area First, Petaluma Makes Buses Free for Everyone
Thanks to SF Gate for sharing the news that Petaluma is the first city in the Bay Area to make all bus services free.
As of July 1, 2024, Petaluma Transit has eliminated fare collection on all Petaluma Transit fixed-route bus service and paratransit services. This one-year pilot program aims to increase ridership, promote Petaluma Transit’s network of services, alleviate the financial burden of low-income riders, improve access, and meet the rigorous climate goals set forth by the City.
Key Highlights of the Fare-Free Program:
- Fare-Free Travel: Starting July 1, all Petaluma Transit services will be completely fare-free. No tickets, no passes, no cash – just show up and ride.
- No Application Needed: Whether you’re a daily commuter or an occasional rider, you can now board any Petaluma Transit bus without a fare. Say goodbye to the hassle of carrying cash or exact change. Enjoy a seamless, hassle-free travel experience.
- Paratransit Services: Paratransit passengers have historically not benefited from common fare-free programs. This groundbreaking initiative allows paratransit riders to use both fixed-route bus services and paratransit services for free, expanding access to those with fixed or limited incomes.
Passengers simply board the bus as usual. There is no need for a pass, cash, exact change, fare card such as Clipper, or other form of identification. There is no action needed by the passenger. Paratransit clients will schedule their trips as they have done in the past, but a fare will no longer be required for their Petaluma Transit paratransit trip.
How long will Petaluma Transit be a fare-free system?
The Petaluma Transit fare-free program begins as a one-year pilot starting July 1, 2024. During this year, we will monitor the program’s effectiveness, including funding, safety, and overall community impact. Our goal is to continue providing fare-free transit as long as it remains beneficial and sustainable for our community.
