Dumping “Donations” at Goodwill is a Bad Idea Right Now

Closed thrift stores buried in dumped-off items with not enough workers to sort through donations

Thanks to Mercury News and ABC7  for reporting that dumping donations in the thrift stores are being discouraged due to the current pandemic.

People have been dumping goods at Goodwill donation sites. There has been an increase of about 25% in donation drops in the Bay Area, San Mateo, San Francisco, and Marin counties despite signs at drop-off sites warning people against it.

ABC7 covered the story and interviewed SF Goodwill President and CEO William Rogers who said, “We are going around and cleaning up as much as we can. What we don’t want is stuff left outside donation sites which people go through and scatter all over the place and it becomes a larger problem.”

They are thankful for the generous donors and for thinking of them during the crisis. However, this is not the best time to send them as there are not enough workers to sort the piles of donations. But they’ll need your support more than ever when they return.
