After a 15-year makeover, one of the Bay Area’s most scenic viewpoints has just reopened in the Marin Headlands.

Hawk Hill now features upgraded trails, lookouts, and signage that make it easy to take in sweeping 360-degree views of San Francisco, the Golden Gate Bridge, the Pacific coast, and the Headlands as it stretches out to Point Bonita.

Hawk Hill gets its name from the hawks and other raptors that use the strong sea breeze to stay buoyant and search for prey. Bird watchers will especially want to stop by during migration season. Hawk Hill is a hotspot for red-tailed hawks, bald eagles, and osprey riding the coastal updrafts, with volunteers counting as many as 18,000 raptors passing through in the fall.

Along the paths, you can check out restored military relics like the Battery Commander Station while enjoying a stroll, hike, or bike ride. New seating, bike racks, and trails that loop past old military tunnels and gun pits make it easier for everyone to enjoy nature, history, and some of the Bay Area’s best views without a long hike.
