Brand New Japanese Supermarket Coming to the East Bay
Thanks to SF Gate for sharing the news that a brand new Japanese grocery store is coming to the East Bay.
Tokyo Central, a popular Japan-based grocer and retailer, is coming to the newly redeveloped Bay Street Emeryville lifestyle shopping center in 2025.
Tokyo Central, owned by Pan Pacific Retail Management (PPRM), offers a wide variety of premium imported Japanese goods such as groceries, made-to-order and ready-to-go food trays, health products and many other specialty items. Tokyo Central at Bay Street will also feature an upscale dining establishment serving fresh and authentic Japanese cuisine. Other grocery stores in the PPRM portfolio include Gelson’s, Don Quijote and Marukai.
The addition of an Asian grocer at Bay Street Emeryville bolsters CenterCal Properties’ commitment to reimagine the merchandising of their properties to reflect the communities they serve — especially in the culturally rich Bay Area where Asians make up the second largest demographic profile in the region. In addition, Asian grocers also cater to millions of other consumers who’ve fallen in love with flavors like matcha, chai, ube and chili crisp. The Bay Street location will be the first Tokyo Central in the East Bay and the second in Northern California.
“Tokyo Central is the ultimate one-stop destination for Japanese specialty food and lifestyle items,” said Kazuhiro Matsumoto, president of PPRM USA. “We are thrilled to bring Japan’s quality and value to a location as diverse as Bay Street Emeryville.”
Tokyo Central will be the newest addition to a host of highly-anticipated storefronts at Bay Street, the East Bay’s renewed epicenter for shopping, eats and entertainment vibes. Miniso and JARS by Fabio Viviani are slated to open their doors by the end of August with Red Door Escape Room opening by the end of 2024. Since CenterCal Properties took ownership in the Summer of 2021, there has been a surge of exciting openings, including ten new restaurants and eateries like Mumu Hot Pot, Fogo De Chão, Flores Cocina & Bar and Pippal Regional Indian and entertainment venues like Tipsy Putt and Sandbox VR.
“Bay Street’s freshly redesigned space offers residents and visitors a unique cultural shopping experience, and the addition of Tokyo Central completes our team’s vision of bringing an important daily needs amenity to the surrounding community,” said Scott Bohrer, VP of Development for Bay Street Emeryville. “Whether you’re in the mood to play a round of miniature golf at Tipsy Putt, throw back a few margaritas with your friends at Flores, or just enjoy your Philz Coffee on our new plaza while taking in all the action around you, Bay Street has it all. Our team has worked tirelessly to curate an enriching experience with our customers and the surrounding community in mind, and we are excited to introduce the new Bay Street Emeryville to the entire region.”
Tokyo Central will be located in the newly built 40,635-square-foot anchor building, which offers 112 rooftop parking stalls. The grocery building coincides with the completion of the new $5 million South Bay Street Plaza and Art Garden, featuring pieces by national and local artists and accentuated by a 13-foot water droplet sculpture from HybyCozo.
