Thanks to Eater SF for sharing the news that when crab season kicks off, you’ll now be able to buy live Dungeness crabs directly off the boat at Fisherman’s Wharf.

On Tuesday, November 9, San Francisco’s Port Commission approved the sale of whole live crabs from fishermen’s boats. Previously, Fisherman’s Wharf was the only port in California that didn’t allow fishermen to sell their freshly caught crabs directly to consumers.

The one-year pilot program will begin at the start of the upcoming commercial crabbing season. The season was set to begin on November 15, but its start was postponed to protect endangered sea life from getting entangled in fishermen’s crab pot lines.

The start of crabbing season is now tentatively scheduled to begin November 22, but may be pushed back further to protect the wildlife if needed.
