This year marks two huge milestones for the city’s Cable Cars – it has been 55 years since these hill climbers were officially named a National Historic Landmark and this is the 55th “Emerald” anniversary of the highly anticipated event.

This event is one of the most beloved traditions that celebrate the iconic cable cars and San Francisco’s rich history – there is nothing more quintessentially San Francisco than the cable cars that traverse the hilly city.

The high-profile contest attracts Muni’s top bell ringers, local dignitaries, community leaders and thousands of spectators. This event draws international, national and grassroots interest as tourists and locals gather around to cheer on their favorite contestants.
