Decathlon Closes Last 2 US Stores, Both in Bay Area
Decathlon recently announced a “new business model” for its US operations which apparently is code for shutting down its final two stores so it can focus instead on online sales and through other retail partners. So Decathlon USA will close its Emeryville (3938 Horton St) and Potrero Hill (2300 16th St., San Francisco) stores in the Bay Area.
According to Bizjournals, effective March 15, 2022, the company will lay off 32 employees across both locations, which are its final stores in the United States. The Emeryville location opened in spring 2019, while the San Francisco Potrero Hill store opened in November 2019.
Decathlon products continue to be available throughout the U.S. at Decathlon.com and at select retail partners, including Walmart, Curated, Target and more. Each partner is carefully selected to ensure they best align with Decathlon’s mission and goals.
“We are changing our business model to adapt to current market conditions and to better meet the needs of our customers,” said Christian Ollier, CEO of Decathlon USA. “It’s clear that our products are well-received in the U.S. market – and we’ve seen record growth over the last few years. However, in order to grow in the right way, we need to adapt and pave the way for the Decathlon of the future. While we will be closing physical stores at this time, our products are available online at Decathlon.com and at a growing number of retail partners.
“We are committed to making sports and the outdoors more accessible with quality, affordable products. This pivot will open the doors to making our products even more available for our customers throughout the U.S.”
Decathlon is one of the world’s largest sports retailers and has nearly 1,700 stores in 60 countries.
