Thanks to the SF Chronicle for sharing news that a brand new ferry service is launching between the San Francisco Ferry Building and Treasure Island. The new service is set to begin in January 2022.

The reason for the brand new ferry service is the new 8,000 housing development slated to open on the 400-acre man-made Treasure Island.

The ferry ride is expected to take 10 minutes, but the commute time was cut nearly in half on its Media Preview Day held earlier this week. Surprisingly, the ride only took 5 minutes and 52 seconds. For now, the ferry is being tested but will open to the public in the new year.

Ferry service will run 17 trips a day, and rides will cost $5. To launch, the ferry service will use a 48-passenger boat with speeds up to 40mph, operated by Prop SF. However, once the service is established, larger ferries will take over carrying over 100 passengers, operated by the San Francisco Bay Area Water Emergency Transportation Authority.
