Thanks to Broke-Ass Stuart and Eater SF for letting us know the sad news that the owner of the El Farolito, the beloved Mission taqueria and burrito joint, passed away on January 5th at the age of 70.

Salvador “Don Chava” Lopez Monroy emigrated from Mexico in 1975 and founded El Farolito along with the El Farolio ranked-amateur soccer club that plays in Balboa Park.

El Farolito is one of the most popular burrito spots in the Bay Area and was even named “The Most Life-Changing Burrito in America” by Esquire in 2013.

El Farolito has 12 Bay Area locations including three in San Francisco.
