Thanks to SFist for sharing the news that soon you can take a driverless car in San Francisco (This is fully driverless… there’s with no back-up human driver in the front seat. Welcome to the future!)

Cruise just announce that they are opening up their driverless cars in San Francisco to the public. They’ve opened up a sign-up page on their site, so you can take a driverless ride soon — and free, for now. They’re starting with a small number of users and will ramp up as they make more cars available, so sign up now to lock in an early spot.

Take note, there are a few caveats. There’s no word when the free rides will begin. Cruise suggests it’s “weeks not months.” The Chronicle says the free rides will be offered from 11 pm to 5 am in the city’s northwest quadrant which includes neighborhoods: Nob Hill, the Fillmore, the Panhandle, the Sunset and the Richmond.

Plus we have no idea how many rides they will offer and if they’re using this mostly for data gathering of potential customers. The sign up page asks you for what neighborhoods you work and live in.

But a hey…a free ride is a free ride and you might soon be one of the first to take a driverless spin.
