San Francisco’s iconic Sam Wo Restaurant, a staple of Chinatown for over a century, has officially closed its doors. After 116 years of serving the community, the restaurant shut down indefinitely on Sunday, January 26, following the expiration of its lease and the retirement of its longtime owner and chef, David Jitong Ho.

Originally opening on Washington Street shortly after the 1906 earthquake, Sam Wo became known for its affordable Cantonese dishes and late-night service. A decade ago, it relocated to Clay Street, continuing its legacy under the same family. Despite efforts to find a buyer to keep the restaurant running, no successor emerged, marking the end of an era for one of the city’s most beloved dining spots.
