Bottom of the Hill, the 247-capacity Potrero Hill venue that’s hosted everyone from Green Day to the Strokes, is closing at the end of the year after 35 years. The owners say the decision comes from a mix of rising costs, competition from major promoters, and a desire to focus on personal projects. The club has long been a spot for discovering new bands and catching intimate shows for under $30.

Running an independent venue has become increasingly challenging even though the building is owner-owned. The closure is a choice, not a financial collapse, and the owners hope to end on a high note. They’ve also left the door open to selling the venue, but only to someone who would honor its legacy.

Fans can expect shows to continue through the end of the year, giving one last chance to experience live music at one of San Francisco’s most iconic small clubs.
