SF’s Iconic ‘Lucky 13’ Dive Bar Spot Might Reopen

After nearly five years dark, the former Market St. dive is stirring again, with a DJ collective applying for a new license

After sitting dark for nearly five years, the space at 2140 Market St., once home to beloved dive bar Lucky 13, is showing signs of life again.

According to records from the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control, a business called Silver Apple LLC has applied for a Type 42 license, which would allow the sale of beer and wine at the address.

The team behind Silver Apple are also connected to Program Audio, a San Francisco-based DJ collective and record label known for hosting parties across the Bay Area. Hoodline first reported the license filing earlier this month.

Program Audio hasn’t publicly confirmed plans for the space, but in November the group shared that it had been working on a self-funded bar project for nearly a year.

Lucky 13 originally opened in 1994 and became a neighborhood staple, known for its giant red exterior, free popcorn, and punk-leaning dive bar energy. It closed in the winter of 2020 during the pandemic. While there were previous attempts to redevelop the property into housing, zoning issues stalled those plans, leaving the space vacant.

If approved, the new license would mark the first real step toward reopening a bar at the address, though whether it resembles Lucky 13 or becomes something entirely new remains to be seen.
