Muni Adds Cell Service in More Subway Tunnels

Cell service is now live underground on Muni between Embarcadero and West Portal

If you’ve noticed your cell signal no longer cutting out during your Muni ride, you’re not imagining things. Muni has officially expanded underground cellular coverage across more of the Metro system, bringing a welcome upgrade for riders who want to stay connected.

Cell service has been available in the Central Subway since it opened in 2023, but now it extends through the tunnels from Embarcadero to West Portal Station. Work is also underway to bring coverage to the Sunset Tunnel on the N Judah line, with that stretch expected to go live by late April or early May.

Right now, Verizon and AT&T customers can take advantage of the improved service. T-Mobile users will have to wait just a little longer, with coverage expected by July.

The best part? The upgrades didn’t cost Muni anything. The expanded service is thanks to a partnership with BART and Boldyn Networks, the same company behind BART’s underground cell infrastructure. Boldyn even reimbursed Muni for staff time spent on the project.

Looking ahead, the city stands to benefit financially as well. Once installation costs are recouped, Muni will begin receiving a share of revenue from the participating cell providers, likely starting in the first half of 2026.

In the meantime, riders can look forward to uninterrupted music streaming, texting, maps, and transit updates—even underground. A small change, but one that makes the daily commute just a little smoother.
