Oakland to End Free Sunday Parking in 2026

Sunday meter enforcement begins in January 4 with a 30-day warning period

Free Sunday parking in Oakland is officially coming to an end. Starting January 4, 2026, parking meters will operate on Sundays from noon to 6 pm to improve space turnover and support local businesses during one of the city’s busiest days.

The city says free Sunday parking often leads to cars sitting for long periods, making it harder for customers to find spots. A 30-day warning period will begin January 4, with first-time violations receiving mailed warnings before citations are issued.

Officials note that free Sunday parking dates back to a time when most businesses were closed for religious observance. Revenue from Sunday metering will go to Oakland’s general fund. If you’re used to free parking on Sundays, consider this your heads-up before the change takes effect in 2026.
