Oakland & SF Schools Defund Police
ABC7 recently shared that on Wednesday, June 24, the Oakland school board voted unanimously to abolish the district’s police department in a historic measure.
The resolution, George Floyd Resolution to Eliminate the Oakland Schools Police Department, reallocates $2.5 million budget for the police department to students. The board’s new safety plan will move forward without including police. Notably, the Oakland Unified School District is one of the few school districts in the nation that has its own police department. Due to union contacts, the decision will not take effect until June.
Oakland joins San Francisco which on Tuesday, June 23, San Francisco school officials also voted unanimously to withdraw from their contract with the San Francisco Police Department.

TWO MASSIVE VICTORIES TODAY!
Oakland Unified School Board just voted to eliminate its police department & San Francisco is cutting ties and funding from SFPD. Schools should be a sanctuary place for learning, not police violence! Organizers and youth made this happen! https://t.co/S1CUKWOla7
