San Francisco City Hall is hosting a new free photography exhibition that offers a rare look into the city’s transportation history through images pulled from one of the most extensive transit photo archives in the country.

Moving San Francisco: Views from the SFMTA Photo Archive 1903–Now runs from January 15 through June 18, 2026, and features historic photographs of Muni, neighborhoods, and everyday life in San Francisco across more than a century.

The exhibition draws from the SFMTA Photo Archive, a collection of more than 200,000 images documenting public transportation in San Francisco from the early 1900s to today. The photos track the city’s transformation over time, from cable cars and streetcars to buses and Muni Metro trains, as well as the growth of neighborhoods that once sat on sand dunes.

The show includes photographs taken between 1903 and 2025 and highlights how transit has shaped daily life in San Francisco, capturing commuters, operators, street scenes, and evolving city landscapes. Throughout the exhibition, visitors will also find favorite Muni memories and routes shared by San Franciscans, adding a community storytelling element to the experience.

The exhibition is on view in the North Light Court and Ground Floor of San Francisco City Hall and is open during regular City Hall hours.
