Ruth’s Chris Steak House Closed in SF… a Year Ago

It took a year to notice, but national chain shut down permanently in SF just 11 days after shelter-in-place

Thanks to Funcheap reader guywithadog and the SF Gate for letting us know that Ruth’s Chris quietly closed permanently  a year ago, just days after San Francisco instituted shelter-in-place orders.

SF Gate did some digging and found the official closing date was March 28, 2020, but apparently hardly anyone noticed the close was permanent until recently.

Yelper Vee L. was the first (that we know of) to actually notice that the close was permanent about 3 months ago, but no one in the media seemed to notice.

According to the Ruth’s Chris Bay Area website, “Our San Francisco location has permanently closed for business. Thank you to the San Francisco community and we look forward to serving you at our other steak houses.”

Ruth’s Chris also faced serious backlash in April of 2020 when it was reported that the publicly traded chain received $20 million in PPP funds that were intended to help small businesses. Ruth’s Chris subsequently returned the $20 million.
