SF’s New 2-Mile Oceanfront Park Officially Named “Sunset Dunes”
San Francisco’s latest park addition, nestled along the scenic Upper Great Highway, has a name that perfectly captures its beauty and spirit: Sunset Dunes.
The newly christened 2-mile stretch of coastal parkland, set to open on April 12, 2025, is the city’s newest 50-acre outdoor retreat, blending nature, recreation, and community in an exciting new way.
The name Sunset Dunes was selected after an engaging public process, with more than 3,900 San Francisco residents participating in a survey to choose the final name. From a list of 15 potential names—including Playland Parkway, Great Parkway, and Plover Parkway—the community voted for one that best reflected the area’s coastal landscape and iconic San Francisco charm. The result: a name that evokes the region’s stunning sunsets and sandy dunes.
The park’s name was carefully chosen to reflect the public’s desire to honor the landscape’s historical and geographical significance. The name Sunset Dunes not only connects to the natural beauty of the area but also carries an enduring sense of place for San Francisco residents and visitors alike.
Community engagement played a vital role in shaping this new park. The Recreation and Park Department sought name suggestions from locals, receiving over 4,200 entries. A community meeting, attended by 240 participants, further narrowed the list of names based on three key themes: historical significance, connection to nature, and iconic placemaking. The result was a thoughtfully curated list of options, from which Sunset Dunes emerged as the winner.
Though the park’s grand opening on April 12 will bring excitement to the community, the park’s legacy will extend far beyond that special day. Sunset Dunes is set to offer more than just stunning views of the Pacific Ocean and lush coastal ecosystems—it will be a vibrant hub for recreation and relaxation. The park will feature murals, public art installations, hammocks, a bike pump track, skateboarding elements, fitness classes, and live music, ensuring there’s something for everyone.
The opening event will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Noriega Street and will offer the public a chance to explore the park’s features. After the opening, Sunset Dunes will be available year-round as a place for walking, biking, relaxing, and spending time outdoors.
