Secret Marin Mountain Summit Is Finally Opening to the Public
A 161-acre mountain summit in Marin County that’s been off-limits to the public for decades is finally becoming part of the open-space system, giving hikers a new destination with some seriously good Bay Area views.
The Marin County Open Space District approved the purchase of the summit property recently. It will become part of the existing King Mountain Open Space Preserve near Larkspur, opening up land that had been tied up with development plans for more than 30 years.
Once the purchase is finalized, the county plans to remove the existing fencing and add trail signs. The best part? Two new picnic tables are planned for the summit: one with views of Mount Tamalpais and another overlooking the Bay, Tiburon Peninsula and Angel Island.
The purchase is expected to be completed by Sept. 8, 2026, though officials expect it could happen sooner. After decades of waiting, Marin hikers will finally get to see what’s been up there.
