SF Had 86% Turnout in 2020 Election: Highest in 60+ Years

City sees highest voter turnout since 1956. Plus 91.44% of ballots cast were “Vote by Mail”

San Francisco turned out big time for the 2020 election, the highest voter turnout since 1956 with 86.23% of registered voters casting ballots. The turnout was up over 5% from the last presidential election in 2016 which saw a turnout of 80.71%.

According to the official tally at sfelections.sfgov.org/ as of November 13 (the most recent updated numbers) 449,318 out of 521,099 registered San Francisco voters cast ballots for the 2020 election.

For 2020, San Francisco far preferred mail-in ballots with 91.45% of all ballots cast being “Vote by Mail” and just 8.55% being “Election Day” ballots.

How does 2020 voter turnout stack up historically?
Voter turnout during recent Presidential elections has typically ranged between 67-81%. This is the highest percentage since 1956, matching 86.23% voter turnout when Dwight Eisenhower defeated Adlai Stevenson for President.

The only other election on record topping the 2020 election was 1944 when 86.82% of voters cast ballots during WWII when Franklin Roosevelt defeated Thomas Dewey to win a fourth term
