SF Testing Bringing Uber/Lyft Back onto Market Street
Starting Monday, August 26, San Francisco will quietly roll out a test program bringing Uber Black, Lyft Black, and Waymo back to Market Street for the first time since the city banned most car traffic in 2020.
The pilot will allow limited pickups and drop-offs at seven designated spots along Market Street, including IKEA, the Warfield, and Proper Hotel. Rideshare cars will only run during the evening and overnight hours (7pm to 6am), while Waymo will operate off-peak daytime hours (9am to 4pm) and overnight.
City leaders say the goal is to boost downtown recovery, make it easier to get to theaters, restaurants, and shops, and test whether rideshare can return without disrupting Muni or bike and pedestrian safety.
During the trial, SFMTA will track traffic, safety data, and rider demand before deciding whether to expand hours or locations.
Designated pickup and drop-off zones:
- Market at Mason (IKEA)
- Market at 6th (Blick)
- Market at Taylor (Warfield)
- Market east of Jones (Urban Alchemy)
- Market east of Jones (Prism Apartments)
- Market at 7th (across from Proper Hotel)
- Market at 8th (Trinity Place and Lighthouse for the Blind)
