SF Union Square’s Makeover: Ping Pong, Pop-A-Shot & Juggling
Union Square is getting a much-needed glow-up. Recently, Union Square has more pigeons than people, but now the iconic San Francisco destination is set to buzz with energy thanks to a packed lineup of free events and activities. From live music and chess tournaments to dance workouts and juggling lessons, Union Square is trading empty spaces for lively faces, bringing new excitement to the heart of the city.
Some vast enhancements are coming to Union Square as the iconic plaza undergoes a major revitalization modeled after New York City’s Bryant Park. Starting this Thursday, January 30, 2025 (weather permitting), locals and visitors can enjoy a variety of free daily programs and amenities designed to make Union Square a more vibrant, family-friendly destination.
The improvements are being led by Biederman Redevelopment Ventures Corporation (BRV), the urban planning firm credited with transforming Bryant Park in NYC, along with successful projects like Salesforce Park in San Francisco. With a focus on creating inviting public spaces, BRV has been contracted by the city’s Office of Economic and Workforce Development to bring 200 days of programming to Union Square throughout the next year.

Bringing New Life to Downtown SF
The revitalization of Union Square is part of a broader effort to boost Downtown San Francisco’s retail and hospitality sectors. Former Mayor London Breed announced the initiative in December, aiming to bring a consistent schedule of events and activations to breathe new life into the area.
With BRV’s expertise and a robust lineup of activities, Union Square is aiming to be a dynamic urban destination, offering something for everyone—from families and chess lovers to fitness enthusiasts and music fans.
Stay Tuned for More
This is just the beginning. As the project evolves, more programs and events will be introduced, giving San Franciscans plenty of reasons to rediscover and enjoy Union Square. Whether you’re looking for a fun outing with the kids, a lunch break activity, or a weekend adventure, these changes promise to make Union Square a vibrant, welcoming space for all, and hopefully, return it to a buzzy, destination-worthy gathering place in The City once again.
