After a four year closure, the historic 117-year-old open-air bar, Savoy Tivoli of North Beach, will finally officially re-open on Thursday, Dec 15, 2022.

In 2018, The Savoy was forced to close while the building that houses it underwent a city mandated earthquake retrofit. Prior to that, the Savoy had been a staple in North Beach for 111 uninterrupted years. Sadly, reopening was delayed with the passing of longtime owner/operator Agnes Claire Kozel in July of 2020. At Claire’s passing, the Savoy was held in her family trust which is managed by her son Paul Kozel.

The Bars

The two bars of the Savoy, each decorated to their own distinct characteristics, have been rejuvenated while maintaining their essence. In the “old bar” you’ll still see the same murals that decorated its walls in the 1960’s but you’ll also see new murals and new artwork that blend into that period as if they’ve always been there. The fancy lady with pearls, still sits atop the bar, keeping secrets as she has decade over decade. The old dance floor is now a plush lounge with repurposed Art Deco lamps that evoke a sense of turn of the 20th century Hollywood elegance.

In the “New Bar,” (built in the 1950s), emphasis was placed on re-creating a place for live music. The stage was revived. Local legacy business JK Sound, recreated the sound system to highlight clarity and ease of listening. The U-shaped bar in the center of the room was tiled with hand crafted emerald green Portuguese wave tiles. To honor the years creatives used the Savoy as inspiration or whimsy, the team brought in art from local North Beach legend Jeremy Fish and hung it over the long plush banquets that run along both sides of the room. The end result of the rejuvenation is a look that is truly one of a kind in San Francisco.
