San Francisco is mourning a true local icon. Claude, the beloved albino alligator who greeted millions of visitors at the California Academy of Sciences, has passed away at the age of 30.

Claude arrived from Louisiana in 2008 and quickly became the unofficial mascot of both the Academy and the city itself. His bright white coloring, calm presence, and gentle charisma made him one of the most recognizable residents in the museum. Generations of Bay Area kids grew up visiting him at the Steinhart Aquarium, and he regularly received fan mail, artwork, and birthday tributes from around the world.

The Academy shared that Claude had been monitored closely in recent weeks due to a declining appetite and was moved behind the scenes for treatment for a suspected infection. Despite intensive care from the Steinhart Aquarium veterinarians and animal care team, he passed away in late November. A full exam and necropsy will be done at UC Davis to determine the cause of death.

For his 30th birthday this past September, the Academy hosted monthlong celebrations that highlighted his impact across the museum and beyond. From social media tributes to in-person festivities, the milestones showed just how deeply loved Claude was by visitors of all ages.

The Academy says a public memorial for Claude will take place soon. Fans are encouraged to share memories or condolences with the care team by emailing claude@calacademy.org or sending mail to:

Claude’s gentle presence and one-of-a-kind look made him a favorite for nearly two decades. He will be missed by fans, staff, and the entire Bay Area community.
