SF’s Brand New Outdoor Movie Nights in Union Square
Free outdoor movies are back in Union Square for 2025, but with a new name.
Starting August 16, 2025, a new series called Cinema on the Square will bring three nights of outdoor films to the plaza, filling the gap left by Sundown Cinema (which ended its 20-year run and won’t be returning in 2025.)
Kicking things off is Mrs. Doubtfire (filmed right here in San Francisco) on Saturday, August 16. The series continues with Big Hero 6 on September 20 and wraps up with Hitchcock’s The Birds on October 4. All screenings are free and start after sundown, with pre-show fun like trivia, prizes, and contests curated by the movie pros at Alamo Drafthouse.
On opening night, there’ll even be a Mrs. Doubtfire look-alike contest for folks who want to go full wig and apron for a chance at free Alamo passes and more.
The series is part of a broader push to reactivate Union Square, which has seen 200+ days of free programming this year. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets, low chairs, and warm layers. Limited seating will be available on a first-come basis.
