SF’s Central Subway Likely Delayed (Again!)

It’s looking like the project won’t open until at least December, or even well into 2023

Oh no… it looks like SFMTA’s Central Subway will likely be delayed yet again.

Thanks to SFist for the scoop. SFMTA says the Central Subway is set to open on September 9, 2022, but The San Francisco Standard has sources who report that the Central Subway is not likely to open until at least December or ‘well into next year.’

Now, perhaps, a two-month delay wouldn’t be much to write about, but the likely delay is just the latest in a long series of delays. The project is already four and half years late. The project is also vastly over budget. The last reported cost estimate is $1.891 billion, which is $313 million over the original proposed budget the city agreed to with the federal government.

Once complete, San Francisco’s Central Subway will traverse four new stations, ending in Chinatown.
