SF’s 40-Year-Old Fillmore Safeway is Shutting Down

One of the only major supermarkets in the neighborhood will close in early March 2024

Thanks to SF Gate for sharing the unfortunate news that San Francisco is losing a much-needed grocery store. The Fillmore District’s Safeway, which has served the neighborhood for the past 40 years, located at 1335 Webster St., is set to close in March 2024. It’s one of the only major supermarkets in the neighborhood.

Safeway is selling 3.83 acres of land in the Webster Plaza to Align Real Estate. The newly acquired land will be used to build a mixed-use project with both housing and commercial retail space. Safeway has announced that its Webster location will close in early March. Thankfully, all of the store employees will remain employed with Safeway and will be relocated to its 15 other San Francisco stores.
