SF’s Giant Ferris Wheel Reopens at Fisherman’s Wharf (Nov. 13)
San Francisco’s giant Ferris wheel is now located at Fisherman’s Wharf.
After nearly 3 years in operation, San Francisco’s SkyStar Observation Wheel said goodbye to Golden Gate Park. The Ferris Wheel has officially moved across town to 2860 Taylor Street, a triangular-shaped lot at Pier 43, near Pier 39 and Fisherman’s Wharf.
The Ferris wheel was installed in the Music Concourse, between de Young Museum and the California Academy of Sciences, in 2020 as part of Golden Gate Park’s 150th-anniversary celebration. The 150-foot Ferris wheel initially met some opposition to its location in Golden Gate Park due to its bright lights and its potential impacts on wildlife. Despite the opposition, more than 650,000 riders took a 12-minute spin around on the Wheel which features 36 gondolas. Golden Gate Park visitors rode the Ferris wheel for the last time on Sunday, October 22.

The Wheel was scheduled to remain in San Francisco until March 2025, however, a recent press release from the Office of the Mayor noted that the “Wheel will operate at its new location for six months under a special event permit from the Port of San Francisco. For future planning consideration, the Port is open to extending that timeline after first engaging with community, residents, businesses, and the Port Commission.”
General admission tickets are $18. Tickets for seniors 65 years and older and children 12 years and under are $12. Children two and under ride for free. SkyStar is open daily from 10 am to 10 pm.
