Thanks to SF Chronicle for sharing that San Francisco’s Flower Market has a new home.

San Francisco Flower Market is relocating to Potrero Hill after 58 years in SoMa. The new market opens January 2, 2025.

The San Francisco Flower Market has moved from its longtime location at Sixth and Brannan to a new site in Potrero Hill, marking a significant shift for the city’s floral industry. After operating in SoMa for 58 years, the market concluded its business there, relocating to 901 16th Street.

The final days at the original location saw activity from vendors and customers, reflecting a period of transition for the market. The move comes after years of discussion about the market’s future in the evolving Central SoMa area. Real estate firm Kilroy Realty acquired the property with plans for an office development, which ultimately led to the market’s relocation. A new 125,000-square-foot facility was constructed in Potrero Hill to house the businesses.

While there’s anticipation for the new space, the move has also brought some concerns. Some tenants have expressed worries about potential cost increases and adjustments to their established operations. There’s a shared recognition of the market’s history at its old location, as the move marks a departure from a familiar space.

New Market Opens January 2, 2025

The new San Francisco Flower Market at 901 16th Street in Potrero Hill is scheduled to open on January 2, 2025.

Market Closure Details: The flower market will be closed to all customers and for all sales from December 27, 2024, through January 1, 2025. Customers are encouraged to coordinate with their vendors and purchase necessary items on December 26th to cover needs during this period.

Changes at the New Location

The new market aims to maintain the variety of fresh flowers offered, including locally grown and imported options. Twenty-seven vendors from the previous location are expected to move to the Potrero Hill site. However, some planned improvements were adjusted, and a financial agreement with Kilroy is dependent on the future construction of the originally planned office development.

The market’s management has acknowledged the adjustment for tenants and the importance of a smooth transition to the new location.

A Part of San Francisco’s Community

The San Francisco Flower Market has been a key part of the city’s cultural and economic landscape. It supports a variety of businesses and employs a diverse workforce. As the market moves to its new location, it remains an important component of the city’s floral industry.

Looking Ahead

The new San Francisco Flower Market at 901 16th St. will open to the public on January 2, 2025, with most vendors planning to continue their operations there. The original SoMa site’s future use is still pending, and is linked to the recovery of the office market. For the community that relies on the market, the new location provides a space for a new chapter to begin.

The San Francisco Flower Market’s transition to Potrero Hill marks a new phase for an established city institution.
