Skatepark under the Freeway
There’s a new skate park to practice your kickflips and nosegrinds and you won’t even need to bring sunblock to enjoy. Hiding underneath Central Freeway, where highway 101 turns into Octavia Street, you’ll find new ramps and rails just waiting for your skateboard wheels to ride on.
SOMA West Skatepark is open and welcomes skaters of all ages to meet and ride together and pretend that they’re being renegade when the whole time it’s just boring old city sanctioned fun.
This $2.5 million project, starting since May 2009, opened in early July with over 50 skateboarders attending and trying out the park. The park is part of a larger city plan to develop areas made accessible after removal of the freeway structure after the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake.
