Tahoe Locals Protest Against Tourism This Weekend
While the pandemic continues on, many people are looking for a mini vacay and heading to Tahoe for an escape. Although, the governor’s Stay-at-Home order is still in effect, Tahoe has seen visitors coming in droves.
Tahoe Daily Tribune reported that Tahoe residents are fed up and feel the area has been overrun with tourists who are trashing the area. In response, locals have organized several protests to help curb tourism and keep their towns clean.
The first protest was on Friday at 4 pm in Meyers, near the roundabout on U.S Highway 50 where most tourists file into town. Five additional protests are planned for Sunday, August 16 in Truckee, Tahoe City, Meyers, Incline Village and Kings Beach.
According to the Tribune, locals are making signs that will read “NO SCHOOL = NO TOURISM;” “DON’T TRASH OUR HOME;” and “TAKE YOUR TRASH WITH YOU.”
If you do decide to visit Tahoe, please wear a mask, practice social distancing, and please leave no trace. Pack all your trash out with you.
