Thanks to Eater for sharing the news that new bars will finally be allowed to open in the Castro for the first time in over 30 years.
On Tuesday, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors approved an ordinance that reverses the ban on new bars that was put in place in 1987 when it was deemed that there were too many bars in the Castro commercial district, the heart of which is at 18th and Castro streets and its surrounding streets.
While the Castro does have numerous gay bars, there is room for expansion. The district no longer has a dedicated lesbian bar or a trans-focused bar.
