SF’s Beloved Pho Spot Turtle Tower Reopens
After closing its doors in 2023, the popular Vietnamese restaurant Turtle Tower has officially reopened in a new location at 220 California Street in the Financial District. Known for its Northern-style pho, particularly the chicken broth-based pho ga, Turtle Tower has been a staple in San Francisco’s food scene since 1999.
The restaurant’s previous locations, including its long-running Tenderloin outpost, developed a loyal following over the years. Many regulars were disappointed when the last location closed due to safety and sanitary concerns, but the return of Turtle Tower has generated widespread excitement. New managing partners Arash Ghanadan and Hilwin Wong, who also own several bars in the city, have taken the lead in bringing the restaurant back, aiming to preserve its legacy while expanding its offerings.
Initially, since reopening on March 12, Turtle Tower was operating with limited hours, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily. Thankfully, on March 24, Turtle Tower adjusted its hours to accommodate more diners. The restaurant is now open Monday through Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Thursday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Additionally, to-go orders are officially back, available for pick-up only.
The new location offers a more refined interior while maintaining a casual, welcoming atmosphere. While some menu items from the previous iteration have yet to return, favorites such as pho ga and pho bo dac biet remain. The new menu also includes a vegan pho option, along with rice plates, vermicelli noodle bowls, and appetizers like fresh spring rolls and papaya salad. A liquor license is pending, with plans for cocktails to be added in the near future.
The Financial District location has seen steady traffic since its reopening, particularly during peak lunch hours. Turtle Tower’s return marks an encouraging moment for San Francisco’s dining scene.
For longtime fans and new visitors alike, the restaurant’s comeback offers a chance to enjoy a piece of the city’s food culture once again. Those hoping to stop by for a bowl of steaming hot pho should plan accordingly, as the renewed popularity of Turtle Tower suggests it will remain a busy destination in the months to come.
