Zara’s New 4-Story Flagship Store Coming to Union Square

The new 40,000 sq. ft. store is taking over a longtime vacant building at 400 Post Street

In a welcome boost for downtown San Francisco, fashion retailer Zara is opening a new flagship store in Union Square — a rare and encouraging sign of investment in the area as it works to recover.

Set to open at 400 Post Street, the upcoming location will span four stories and 40,000 square feet, nearly twice the size of Zara’s former Union Square store just a block away. That store, at 250 Post Street, closed in January 2025 after announcing plans to vacate the space last year. This new location will take over the long-vacant former DSW/Borders building, bringing fresh foot traffic to a spot that’s been quiet for too long.

While Zara may not be a local boutique, its return — and expansion — in Union Square shows that affordable, accessible retail still has a place downtown. It’s a brand that appeals to a wide range of shoppers and can help breathe some life back into the area.

Mayor Daniel Lurie called the move a “vote of confidence” in San Francisco, saying, “Union Square is on its way back, San Francisco is on its way back.”

And in a part of the city that’s seen more headlines about closures than openings in recent years, this feels like a genuine step forward.
